I bought the PC version of this game so that I could play it on my laptop any where I go and not just on my XBox 360 in the living room. This is by far the greatest RPG video game I have ever played. This game is worth the price for anyone who enjoys an open world Role Playing style. This is the type of game that can be played for years on end and does not get old quickly. If you have played other role playing games but have never tried The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion be sure that you don't have any other games you plan working on because it will become the only game you want to play. I'm happy with the price and condition of this game and I am sure I will have hours of game play.

The greatest strength of this game is its versatility. You are able to choose a variety of character types and modify their ages and appearance. You have choices in the type of character to play; good to evil, knight, thief, assassin , vampire, mage, warrior or mix and create your own! There is a difficulty slider for beginning, very young, handicapped, elderly, or those who want greater challenges.
It is not necessary to even do the main quest, and there will still be plenty of things to do. You can simply spend time in a beautiful interesting world with many different surprises and characters. You can create a life there decorating your house, using a Mod to plant a garden, explore the beautiful scenery and watch the sunsets or simply do the quests, or both. When you have finished all of the quests you consider appropriate to your character, you can create a different one with somewhat, or very, different attributes and play a game which requires very different approaches and seems to be a different game.
When you have done all of that a few times, you can check out the web site and find the Mod sites (hundreds of players have used the construction set to make great modifications to the game. These give players even more ways to personalize their game so that it is even more fun and satisfying to individual tastes.) Then you enjoy playing it all over again with things that YOU like and others do not. There are ways to change the appearance of the characters and ones which add new races, weapons, armor and clothing. Some make the game harder with new powerful creatures, or easier, with a way to lower the aggressive nature of most of the wild animals, or a bag that holds all your loot with no weight. Some are even add on adventures such as the Kvatch modifications where you have the opportunity to become the Count, repair the city, and have a throne of your own.
Some think that some of the modifications are 'cheats'. Who would you be cheating? It is a single player game! You might use the Chameleon Ring to avoid most of the challenge ('a game killer' for most people) but it is YOUR choice how to use it, or not. The point is that you have the ability to change the game, and the way it is played, to suit yourself and maximize your fun. I want low stress and not a lot of nitty gritty realism and I can have it. Others want high adrenaline challenges right and left and they can have those, and we all have a game which we can really enjoy. We can even have multiple characters for the type of day we had. And if we tire of them- we can change them.

First I would like to say that I am in no way, shape or form a fan of the Elder Scrolls series. I played ES2 ages ago and I didn't like it too much. I also played breifly ES3: Morrowind and I despised that game. So when I found out about this game, I thought it was more of the same but just prettier. So I decided that I would not listen to the reviews. Because I was not interested in it I didn't even read up on it. So I purchased it last year October and 10 months later, I am still discovering things in this game. That speaks volumes to the developers and what they were trying to create. Also, if you are not into RPG's, then this won't be for you. If you are not into self-discovery or like the linearity of JRPG's which lead you to your destination, you won't like this either. I found it to be quite intimidating considering that this was my first RPG that really allowed you to explore on your own. But once you get into it, you won't want to put it down.
Gameplay
This will be the biggest section of this review. It is fantastic. Now you can play either in the 3rd person view (which is my highest preference) or 1st person, but I actually enjoyed playing in the first person view which is odd for me. I will say that it is more detailed to me and it allowed me to feel as if I had more control over my character. As far as customizing, either you will get addicted to it because it allows you to create your own class, or you will take the pre-created classes that come with the game which is no slouch anyway. It also allows you to change any of these before you enter into the huge world that is Tamriel.At the touch of a button you strike, use magic, items, jump, and defend. Think a highly sophisticated version of Zelda but for adults. Battles are intense especially when you are fighting dozens of enemies at a time. you feel like you are really in the battle. And as far as things to do, what can't you do/
You can farm, fish, live as a civilian, be a warrior, a mage, a journeymen that travels all over the world, a merchant, or a hobbit. And that is just being kind. It is like World of Warcraft for consoles without being online. You can literally do what you want. There are no time limits. The world is yours. If you choose to steal and be feared among men, you can. If you want to be the hero of heroes, you can. There is no place that you can't traverse unlike traditional RPG's where you can only go when they allow you to move to the next section. Again, you will meet all kinds of creatures that you will be able to fight with if you choose. You can also swim and jump which you might have to at times. Riding horses are really simple to and to anyone that has ever played a game where you can do that, this should be simple. But again, combat is wild and movement is very fluid.

Story
I have read complaints on this but it is yours to follow. There are 3 main quests on this particular disc. That includes the original Oblivion story, Knights of the Nine, and the Shivereing Isles. Between the 2 additional quests, you are looking about 60 more hours added to the 35 to 40 that it should take you to go through the main quest. That also doesn't includes sidequests either which brings the total up to about 190 to 200 hours and that is just with those sidequests known. Even a game guide that I bought from the store said that there may be other quests that are in the game but the developers have given them as much as they were able to before the time of it being released. Quests are outlined and easy to keep track of with a quest guide in your menu. Again, it might be a bit cookie cutter, but I felt like I was playing in Lord of the Rings with the main quest. Any fan of fantasy will enjoy it.
Graphics
Gorgeous. Sometimes you get a game where the mechanics are all working but it is your own imagination that takes you through the game because it doesn't look great. Not with oblivion. I found myself stopping sometimes and watching the sun rises on cliffs and when it goes down in the forest. Absolutely amazing. Models are what they should be. I also played through HDMI and I would recommend it to anyone that can afford to. It will be on par and sometimes even trump the PC version on HD.
This was truly an outstanding game and I could go on and on with reasons why you should get it. 2 things left though. There were some load times for entering new areas, but they were quick and won't get on your nerves because it never got on mine. There were also times where I got stuck and had to reload so make sure you save often. Other than that, it would be a disservice to you if you passed this game by.

Oblivion is the best game I have ever played. After 1 year of playing, I still yet seem to can't stop playing. The story line is not as yet as good as Morrowind (the previous game) but the game is just amazing. I recomend this game to anyone who is looking to find a game to spend time on. Only thing wrong with this game, It takes your life away! That game is addicting, but you should buy this game.
